Handcrafted Spalted Maple Accent Table
This accent table was designed as a study in form, material, and craftsmanship—bringing together traditional techniques with a more sculptural approach to design.
The base centers around a lathe-turned spindle, shaped to create a more organic, almost otherworldly form. The legs are carefully cut and joined into the sphere of the spindle using a mortise-style connection, creating both structural strength and a seamless transition between elements.
Poplar was selected for the base and legs due to its workability and ability to take on detailed shaping, allowing the turned and carved elements to come through cleanly and intentionally. It also, resembles Maple well to blend the two woods.
The top is crafted from Ambrosia maple, chosen for its natural variation and character. With spalting, subtle figuring, and knots throughout, the surface highlights the organic beauty of the wood—making each angle of the piece visually unique.
The result is a functional table that also serves as a statement piece—combining precise craftsmanship with the natural unpredictability of the material.
