Handcrafted Heirloom Storage Trunk
This trunk was designed as a functional statement piece—combining traditional craftsmanship, hidden details, and materials with personal meaning.
The exterior is built from buggy red oak, selected for its rich character, natural figuring, and variation. Accents of walnut sourced from my family farm are incorporated throughout the piece, adding depth, contrast, and a direct connection to its origin.
The lid is constructed from reclaimed barnwood siding, bringing texture and history into the design, while custom steel hardware—designed and cut by a local water jet metalsmith—adds a distinctive, handcrafted edge. Each handle is wrapped in leather for a more comfortable grip and a refined, tactile detail.
Beyond its exterior, the trunk was built to be discovered.
A grain-matched false bottom creates a seamless interior surface while concealing three hidden pocket drawers. These drawers are accessed through a concealed front panel, opened using a natural knot—turning a simple detail into an intentional, functional feature.
Each drawer is crafted with walnut sides and buggy red oak bottoms, continuing the material story throughout the piece.
Inside, the trunk includes built-in rails supporting a removable, divided tray for organized storage, along with an angled compartment designed for larger or more specific items.
From joinery to material selection, every aspect of this trunk was thoughtfully considered. The combination of natural wood variation, custom metalwork, and hidden storage elements creates a piece that is both highly functional and visually rich.
